Chapter 1 – “Call the Driver” (Expanded)

I WILL CALL UPON THE LORD, WHO IS WORTHY TO BE PRAISED; SO SHALL I BE SAVED FROM MY ENEMIES.
You don’t have to wait till your problems weigh you down to the grave.

Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. (Isaiah  55:6)

I was elbow‑deep in suds, the kitchen humming with the ordinary rhythm of a busy mom, when the lights flickered and a cold draft slipped through the open window. The plate I’d been polishing hovered for a heartbeat, then fell with a soft clink onto the counter. My breath caught.

From the doorway a man in a weather‑worn coat stood, his eyes amber‑bright, as if a candle burned behind them. Before I could utter a word, he lifted a finger and whispered, “Call the driver.” The words seemed to echo inside my skull, pulling at something deeper than fear.

He stepped forward, and the floorboards beneath him sang a low, resonant tone. In an instant the kitchen dissolved. I stood on a dusty road lined with olive trees, the scent of incense thick in the air. A small, ancient chapel rose at the end of the lane, its wooden doors open to a warm, golden light that pulsed like a heartbeat.

A carriage drawn by white horses waited, its driver cloaked in light, his face hidden but his presence undeniably holy. The stranger—now smiling—raised his hand, and the vision snapped back to my kitchen as quickly as it had begun. The plate hovered again, this time a few inches above the sink, rotating slowly as if caught in a gentle wind.

My heart hammered. “Who are you?” I whispered, voice trembling.

He didn’t answer. Instead, a soft chime rang from the hallway, and the kitchen door swung shut on its own. The tap was still running, water spilling over the edge, but the sound seemed distant, as if muffled by a veil.
The Phone That Wouldn’t Stay Silent.

The phone on the counter began to vibrate. I lunged for it, but the screen stayed black. When I finally managed to swipe, a single word glowed: “TRUST.”

Before I could react, the phone rang again—this time a clear, melodic voice filled the room:

“You have been heard. Follow the road you are on, and you will find the path I have prepared.”

The line went dead, but the words lingered, echoing off the kitchen cabinets like a promise.
The Hidden Message
While I stared at the silent phone, a soft rustle came from the pantry. I turned to see the door slightly ajar, a thin sliver of light spilling out. Inside, among the canned beans, lay an old leather‑bound journal, its pages yellowed with age. I pulled it out, and the first line was written in a hand I recognized—my grandmother’s:

“When the driver calls, remember the bell that never tolls for the faithful.”

A sudden chill ran down my spine. I remembered the silver bell that had appeared on the hallway floor moments before. I reached for it, and as my fingers brushed the metal, a warm pulse traveled up my arm, and a vision flashed: a young woman in a simple dress, eyes bright, standing before a congregation, her hands raised in prayer. The congregation’s faces were blurred, but one figure stood out—a man in a coat identical to the stranger’s, his hand outstretched toward a child holding a broken toy. The child’s tears turned to laughter as the toy repaired itself, and a soft voice whispered, “He is the Driver.”

The vision shattered, and I was back in the kitchen, the bell still humming faintly in my palm.
The Unexpected Guest
Just then, the front door burst open. Matthew staggered in, drenched from an unexpected downpour, his coat dripping onto the floor. In his hand he clheld a cramped, weather‑worn envelope addressed to me. He thrust it forward, eyes wide.

“I found this on the seat of the taxi that brought me home. The driver—he said it was for you. He vanished before I could thank him.”

Inside the envelope lay a single, pristine white card with a simple inscription: “The road awaits. – D.”

My mind raced. The driver, the stranger, the bell, the journal—all converging in a single, bewildering moment. I felt a gentle pressure on my shoulder, as if an unseen hand were reassuring me.
The Storm Outside
A sudden crack of thunder rattled the windows, and rain hammered the roof like a frantic drumbeat. The power flickered, and the kitchen lights dimmed to a soft amber glow. In that dimness, the silhouette of a figure appeared in the doorway—taller than any man, draped in a cloak of shadows, its face obscured.

A low, resonant voice echoed, “You have called, but the journey has only begun.”

Before I could respond, a brilliant flash of light split the darkness, and the figure dissolved into a cascade of golden particles that settled on the floor like dust. In their place lay a small wooden cross, its surface etched with the words “Fear not, for I am with you.”

My breath caught. The cross felt warm against my palm, and a wave of peace washed over me, quieting the storm both inside and out.
The Final Call
The phone rang once more, this time a familiar ringtone—my mother’s voice. I answered, and she laughed, “I just heard the most amazing story about a driver and a bell. Thought you’d like to know that the church across town is having a prayer meeting tonight. They’re praying for… well, for you.”

I stared at the cross, the bell, the journal, and the card, feeling the weight of each mystery. The kitchen, once just a place of chores, had become a threshold between the ordinary and the miraculous.

I whispered, “Lord, I call upon You. Be my Driver.”

The lights steadied, the rain softened, and a gentle breeze slipped through the open window, carrying with it the faint scent of lilies and a promise that no matter how tangled the road, the One who calls us is always steering.
Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever‑present help in trouble.”

Psalm 50:15 – “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”
I have added a handful of new twists: the mysterious journal, the hidden bell, the supernatural storm, the shadowy figure, the wooden cross, and a final divine invitation. The coming chapter now promises to feel richer, with each revelation deepening the mystery while reinforcing the central Christian theme of trusting God’s guidance.
